Grassfed Pigs in a Blanket

Easy method for making a platter of pigs in a blanket with your choice of grassfed hot dogs (beef, pork, or turkey) and quick and easy crescent rolls.

When I have a group of teens coming over, my favorite dish to make is pigs in a blanket. Of course, I don’t make a platter using conventional hots dogs and crescent rolls, however!

This dish is simple to make with healthful substitutions like grassfed, nitrate-free hot dogs and crescent rolls made with sprouted flour. I typically choose all-beef dogs, but you can choose whatever kind you prefer.

If you are in a time crunch, you can substitute organic crescent rolls from the store for homemade. Even supermarkets carry them, from what I’ve seen in my community. However, the homemade ones aren’t that hard, so I recommend giving them a try if you can!

A platter of grassfed pigs in a blanket has been a huge hit for me as a simple finger food. Nearly all the kids love it, no matter if they eat healthily or not. Adults enjoy it too! They are a real crowd-pleaser, and usually one of the first empty platters on the serving table.

Instructions

  1. Cream the coconut sugar in a large bowl with the melted butter and yogurt.

  2. Mix the sprouted flour, sea salt, and baking soda in a separate bowl.

  3. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients using a handheld mixer.

  4. Roll out the dough on a pastry cloth (or lightly floured cutting board) to one-quarter inch (1/4″) thickness. If the dough is too thick, thin with small amounts of water until it is easy to roll.

  5. Cut dough into 24 triangles that are approximately 4 inches (10 cm) long and 1.5 inches (4 cm) wide.

  6. Cut each of the grassfed hot dog into quarters. Alternatively, if you can find mini grassfed hot dogs in your area, use 24 of these.

  7. Roll up each grassfed hot dog piece into a piece of triangle shaped dough.

  8. Place the 24 pigs in a blanket on a large pan or cookie sheet. Bake at 350 F/ 177 C for about 20 minutes or until the pigs in a blanket are golden brown on top.

  9. Remove from the oven and serve.

  10. Once cooled, refrigerate leftovers in a covered container for up to 4 days.
